Privacy fences: Six-foot wood or vinyl privacy for back yards.
Wood picket fences: A four-foot picket out front suits older homes near downtown and fits the front-yard limit.
Vinyl fences: Privacy or picket styles that never need paint or stain.
Aluminum fences: Decorative and open, and a common pick around pools.
Chain link: Affordable and strong for dogs, kids and kennels.
Farm and field fence: Wire, board and split rail for the pasture and acreage around town.
Gates and repairs: Walk gates, drive gates, leaning posts, sagging gates and storm damage.
Inside Benson town limits, fences go through the Town of Benson Planning, Zoning and Inspections Department at 303 E. Church St. The town uses a Fence Permit: Zoning Compliance form, and it asks for a plot plan that shows where the fence will sit on your lot.
For all residential districts, the town publishes these limits. Open and solid fences can go up to four feet in the front yard and the street side yard. Solid fences can go up to six feet in interior side yards and the rear yard. Open means chain link or split rail; solid means privacy style. A fence cannot be built inside an access or utility easement, and it cannot block the view drivers and walkers need at driveways and streets.
If your home is in an HOA, Benson asks for paperwork showing the HOA approved the fence. Pools need a fence at least four feet tall.
Benson's planning area also includes an extraterritorial jurisdiction, or ETJ, that reaches about a mile past town limits, where town zoning still applies. Farther out you are in unincorporated Johnston County. The county says it has no setback requirement for fences, but it recommends staying 1 to 2 feet inside your property line. We check which rules cover your address before we build.
Benson grew up around the railroad in the late 1880s, and it still has that shape. Close to Main Street you find older homes on established lots, often with big trees, old fence lines and a neighbor's shed right where you want a post. Those jobs take careful layout.
Farther out there are newer subdivisions with HOA rules on height, color and style, and there is farmland with long runs where the fence has to hold livestock, not just mark a line. We build all three kinds, and we will tell you plainly which material fits.
Southern Johnston County ground tends to be sandy and well drained. That is good for the wood, but loose soil grips a post less than clay does, so we set posts deep in concrete and space them for wind.
We are also close. Benson is right down the road from home for us, so an estimate or a gate adjustment is an easy trip.
